Annemiek van Vleuten has held the prestigious maglia rosa, the leader’s jersey, in the Giro d’Italia Donne a record-breaking 23 times.
The Dutch cyclist, Annemiek van Vleuten, began her defense of the Giro d’Italia Donne title in style, securing her 100th career victory on the second stage of the competition this Saturday.
The three-time title holder set a new record as the Giro’s oldest stage victor at 40 years and 266 days, following an outstanding solo performance.
Her extraordinary effort saw her conquer the Passo della Colla climb, crossing the finish line in Marradi with a 45-second lead over the rest.
Danish rider Cecilie Ludwig finished second, with France’s Juliette Labous taking third place.
The race was originally slated to commence on Friday with an opening time trial in Chianciano, but this was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
Van Vleuten, who rides for Movistar and plans to retire after this season, is targeting her fourth Giro title, adding to her earlier triumphs in 2018, 2019, and 2022.
The record for the previous oldest stage winner in the Giro d’Italia Donne was held by Canada’s Linda Jackson, who claimed the title at 39 years and 236 days in 1998.
The other places on the podium were decided in a sprint finish.
With her victory, including time bonuses, Van Vleuten has gained a 49-second advantage over Ludwig in the overall classification, with Labous trailing by an additional two seconds.
