Unexpectedly, Bailey Tardy, currently ranked 455th in the world, leads the charge after the second round of the US Women’s Open.

This LPGA newcomer, with five missed cuts and one withdrawal from 10 events this season, successfully qualified to participate at Pebble Beach this week.

Tardy, an American player, was only a shot behind the leader after the first round and managed to hit a four-under 68 on Friday to progress to seven under, earning her a two-shot lead.

“I feel it’s something incredibly unique,” remarked the 26-year-old.

“I’m genuinely savoring the moment here and trying not to get ahead of myself.”

In her four attempts at the US Women’s Open, this is the first time Tardy has made the cut. This is her first appearance since 2017, having received an opportunity at a qualifier in Minnesota and securing one of two spots during a four-hole playoff.

In her second round in California, Tardy scored four birdies and repeated her eagle from the previous day on the par-five sixth hole, despite two bogeys.

Fellow American Allisen Corpuz and South Korean Hyo Joo Kim are trailing Tardy by two shots.

Irish Amateur Donegan One Shot Behind Leader After First Round

Kim shared the lead after the first day and looked set to hold her position, but she finished her round with two consecutive bogeys.

Like Tardy and Corpuz, Leona Maguire from Ireland, was one shot behind the lead but has now fallen six shots behind after a challenging two-over 74 round that included five bogeys.

Her fellow Irish player, Aine Donegan, slipped to a four-over 76 after an initial round of 69.

This performance placed the 21-year-old amateur, playing in her first LPGA Tour event, in a group one over that includes England’s Charley Hull and the 20-year-old American prodigy, Rose Zhang.

Jodi Ewart Shadoff, who was the best-placed English player, shot a 76, putting her on par with her compatriot Bronte Law at three over.

Gemma Dryburgh of Scotland made the cut despite a 77, but world number one, Jin Young Ko, was eliminated despite her even par round on Friday.

Former champions Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie West also missed the cut, and both were participating in their final tour events.

“I’m thrilled to have played my last round here at Pebble Beach,” stated Wie West, 33, the 2014 champion, who became the youngest player to make the cut at the US Women’s Open twenty years ago.

“I know this is my last one, but it’s been wonderful to be here,” added Swede Sorenstam, 52, a ten-time major winner.
