At the 2022 Road Cycling World Championships in Australia, Josh Tarling triumphed by securing gold in the junior time trial.

The National Road Championships saw Tarling set a new record, becoming the youngest British elite men’s time trial champion by achieving victory with over a minute to spare.

His fellow cyclists from Wales, Anna Morris and Elinor Barker, clinched the silver and bronze medals respectively in the women’s race, which was won by Lizzie Holden from the Isle of Man in Darlington.

Tarling, at 19, surpassed Fred Wright by one minute and three seconds over the 41.1km course.

In the aftermath of his victory, the Ineos Grenadiers cyclist said, “It feels a bit strange to have won. However, I’m ecstatic. It’s an incredible feeling to win against such strong competitors and I’m really excited to be able to wear the British champion’s jersey in some high-profile races moving forward.”

He emphasised the significance of not overexerting at the beginning of the race, “I didn’t want to start off too strong, nor too weak when I was feeling in good shape.”

The championships are set to continue on Friday, 23 June with elite men’s and women’s circuit races, followed by road races on Sunday.

Tarling, a two-time British track champion with victories in points and team pursuit titles last year, is setting his sights on further success in north Yorkshire this week.

“I’d really like to earn another jersey in the circuit on Friday,” he expressed.

“I secured a place on the podium last year so it would be nice. Criterium races, or ‘Crits’, are always exciting and it’s a fierce competition for an hour.”
