Nicolas Jackson (on the left) and Conor Gallagher were contributors to Chelsea’s win over Brighton
Chelsea’s manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has stated that new striker Nicolas Jackson requires “time to settle” in the Premier League, following a stellar performance in their post-season triumph over Brighton.
The 22-year-old displayed his prowess with a goal and two assists, helping the Blues to a 4-3 victory over Brighton after a shaky start.
The Senegalese forward transitioned to Chelsea from Villarreal in June.
“These kinds of games are crucial for him to understand the intensity of playing in the Premier League,” mentioned Pochettino.
Christopher Nkunku offset Danny Welbeck’s initial goal for Brighton in Philadelphia, followed by a swift onslaught of three goals in 11 minutes from Mykhailo Mudryk, Conor Gallagher, and Jackson.
Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke was dismissed due to a second yellow card in the 60th minute, but the reduced team fought back.
Joao Pedro’s penalty and a last-minute goal from Deniz Undav kept Brighton competitive against the Blues till the final whistle.
Jackson had an impressive record of 13 goals in 38 games for Villarreal last season, with nine of them coming in the last eight league matches.
He notched an assist in Chelsea’s first match of their USA tour against Wrexham.
“When Chelsea recruits a player like him, it’s because they’ve identified significant potential in quality and talent,” stated Pochettino.
“He’s an enormous talent that needs some adjustment time to the new club and the Premier League.
Being young, we need to support his growth, help him evolve and become a significant player for Chelsea.”
Nkunku, who migrated to the Blues from RB Leipzig at a cost of £52m the previous month, has managed to score in both post-season matches.
When queried about the potential of Nkunku and Jackson starting together, who have been rotating the number nine position, Pochettino said: “Undoubtedly, the next few games will present the opportunity to field them together. Physical condition circumstances mean we need to rotate them to evenly distribute the minutes.”
Is it a fresh chapter for Mudryk?
Mudryk has had difficulty securing a starting position since his £89m arrival at Stamford Bridge in January.
The forward represented Ukraine in the European Under-21 Championships to recuperate his form and was rewarded with his inaugural goal for Chelsea.
After teaming up with Jackson, he launched a volley from the outskirts of the penalty area and demonstrated his offensive potential throughout the match with his speed.
“Attack-minded players need to score and gain self-confidence,” said Pochettino.
“Scoring goals is always crucial. I believe today we demonstrated slightly more composure; perhaps we could create more opportunities and score more frequently.
We need to have faith in the process to arrive at the first Premier League match in the best possible shape.”
Colwill ‘has the potential to be the best in England’
Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton’s manager, previously expressed his interest in signing Chelsea defender Levi Colwill on a permanent basis after his successful loan spell at the Seagulls.
Despite granting a penalty against Brighton, the 20-year-old joined Chelsea after his triumph with England Under-21s.
After the match, Pochettino asserted that Colwill was “our player” and would stay with the Blues.
“His performance today exceeded my expectations as it’s his first game with us after the season with Brighton,” the Argentine manager added.
“I’m extremely pleased; he has the potential to be one of England’s premier centre-backs.”
