Conor McGregor’s recent involvement in a promotional stunt, where he reportedly injured the mascot for the Miami Heat basketball team, has drawn criticism from UFC boss Dana White. White expressed his disapproval, stating that punching mascots is not a wise decision.
During halftime at an NBA Finals game, former UFC champion McGregor sprayed the Heat’s furry mascot, Burnie, with his pain relief spray. McGregor proceeded to punch Burnie, causing him to fall to the ground. Despite the incident, reports indicate that the individual inside the Burnie costume received medical treatment and is now recovering at home.
White, speaking about the matter at UFC 289 in Vancouver, referred to a similar incident involving boxer Deontay Wilder and an ESPN mascot in 2018. Expressing bewilderment, White questioned why mascots would willingly subject themselves to punches from professional fighters.
He remarked, “What’s the deal with mascots seeking to be punched by professional fighters? What do they expect? Unless they’re like the Golden Knights mascot, with a presumably sturdy metal helmet, I can’t comprehend why a mascot would invite professional fighters to strike them. It’s not the smartest decision.”
The Miami Heat, having lost 108-95 in the game, now trail 3-1 with two games remaining in the NBA Finals. The team has chosen not to comment on the incident.

OMG, why would Conor McGregor do that to the mascot?! That’s just plain stupid. Like, seriously, who punches mascots? Not the brightest idea, man!
I can’t believe the UFC boss, Dana White, had to say something about this. He’s right, though. Mascots asking for punches from fighters? What were they thinking?
Conor McGregor really needs to think before he acts. Punching a mascot? Come on, that’s just disrespectful. It’s a good thing the mascot is okay now.
The Miami Heat must be embarrassed by this incident. Losing the game and then having their mascot get knocked down by McGregor? Rough night for them.
I gotta agree with Dana White on this one. What’s up with mascots putting themselves in harm’s way? They should stick to entertaining the crowd and leave the fighting to the professionals.
