Juanma Lillo Steps in for Two Upcoming Premier League Matches
While Manchester City’s head coach Pep Guardiola is at home recovering from a recent back operation, his presence is still strongly felt within the team, claims assistant manager Juanma Lillo.
Guardiola underwent the surgical procedure in Barcelona a few days ago and will be absent from the sidelines during Manchester City’s next two outings. In the meantime, Lillo will serve as the acting manager for this Saturday’s clash against Sheffield United and the game against Fulham at the Etihad Stadium on September 2.
“Communication hasn’t skipped a beat,” shared Lillo. “As we speak, Pep is dissecting Sheffield United’s tactics. While his health is a priority, it hasn’t diminished his trademark focus on the game.”
Guardiola himself has indicated that the surgery went as planned, and although his recovery is on track, it will require the due time to complete. “He’s doing well, all things considered,” Lillo confirmed.
That said, Lillo revealed that Guardiola won’t be giving the pre-game pep talk (pun absolutely intended) via video conference for the match at Bramall Lane. “A virtual face-off isn’t on the cards; Pep isn’t into that,” Lillo elaborated.
Lillo, who rejoined Manchester City this summer for a second term as Guardiola’s right-hand man, had spent the previous season managing Qatari team Al-Sadd.
Off to a solid start, Manchester City has emerged victorious in the first two matches of the 2023-24 Premier League season, with a 3-0 win over Burnley and a 1-0 triumph against Newcastle.
In a strategic roster enhancement, the Premier League champs also unveiled their latest acquisition, Jeremy Doku from Rennes, on a five-year deal worth £55.4 million. “The squad is in fine fettle, and if you’ve seen Doku, you know what he brings to the table. He’s going to be a real asset,” said Lillo.
Lillo also emphasized that the spotlight shouldn’t solely focus on Doku. “Anytime we welcome a new talent, we’re looking at the bigger picture, the collective benefit to the team. We’re not setting him up as a savior or anything.”
Returning from injury, Bernardo Silva is all set to take the field after extending his contract until 2026. Speaking on the Portuguese international, Lillo was effusive. “To gauge Bernardo’s value to the team, all you need to do is look at his track record. His impact is as clear as day.”
