In her impressive 19th WNBA season, Diana Taurasi, a prominent basketball Olympian who boasts five gold medals with Team USA, has broken new ground.
Guard for the Phoenix Mercury, Diana Taurasi marked a historic moment in the WNBA on Thursday, by being the first player to amass 10,000 points over her career.
The 41-year-old Taurasi achieved the landmark during the third quarter with a three-pointer in the Mercury’s solid 91-71 victory over Atlanta Dream at their home turf.
She finished the game with 42 points, simultaneously setting another record as the eldest player in the league’s history to score a 40-point game.
Speaking to ESPN, Taurasi said, “I just felt good and they were looking for me.”
As a three-time WNBA champion and two-time Most Valuable Player in the WNBA finals, Taurasi concluded the night with an impressive total of 10,024 career points.
She further commented: “Sometimes [the shots] go in because they go in, because it’s your day. And [this] was my night.”
Entering the game knowing she was only 18 points shy of the 10,000 mark, Taurasi had already scored 10 points by half time. She then swiftly added a two-point lay-up and a three-pointer to her score.
In the next possession for Mercury, Taurasi received a pass from Moriah Jefferson and successfully made the shot, much to the crowd’s delight.
The WNBA commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, extended her congratulations to Taurasi, noting that she “continues to write new chapters in her illustrious WNBA career”.
Engelbert voiced her honor in witnessing this milestone, attributing Taurasi’s accomplishment to her “skill, determination, and unwavering dedication to the game”.
