Erling Haaland has been scoring A LOT of goals this season! He recently scored an amazing bicycle kick for Manchester City’s victory over Southampton. That was his second goal in the match and City won 4-1. This win extended their eight match winning streak which put them under pressure to catch up with Arsenal who lead the Premier League rankings right now.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been amazing for the past two decades, but there is someone who is even better,” Manager Pep Guardiola said to Sport News Centre.
“His second goal was incredible! It isn’t easy to catch a ball from the sky onto the ground.”
Guardiola added: “I believe our bosses bought him just for games like this. Even though we were not playing very well, he got that goal.
“The second one too – you can’t even imagine how he had such skill at his height. Just an extraordinary goal!”
Man City signed soccer player Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £51.2M in July last year. In just 9 months, he already scored 44 goals in all competitions – the same amount of goals as Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mohamed Salah got in one season! Man City are now through to the Champions League quarter-finals and FA Cup semi-finals, so Haaland might get more chances to break this record.
The other night, his goal in St Mary’s was his 30th league goal of the season. It took him only 27 games to score that many goals – faster than anyone else!
Kevin de Bruyne, a teammate said “He scores so much it’s unbelievable! Every time we create a chance, he’ll make sure to get it in the back of the net.”
De Bruyne also joked about Haaland’s amazing second goal by saying “I could never do something like that! If I tried that, I’d need to go to the hospital!”
“Haaland is really happy playing here,” said someone. “We CREATE lots of chances and he executes them.”
Someone on SportNewsCenter Radio 5 Live commented that Haaland’s finish was “really great”. They said, “He had to adjust a lot but the way he did it was amazing.”
Jonathan Pearce, a commentator for SportNewsCenter Match of the Day said in amazement: “I’ve been doing this job for 42 years and I have never seen a goalscorer like this – he is an absolute machine! Absolutely stunning”.
Only two other players have ever scored 30 or more goals in their first season in the Premier League. Andrew Cole achieved 34 goals back in 1993-94 while Kevin Phillips had 30 goals in 1999-00.
Haaland has scored more goals than 8 Premier League teams with almost 3 months of the season left.
With his assist for Haalands first goal, De Bruyne made history too – becoming the 5th person ever and the fastest to get 100 Premier League assists in only 237 games.
De Bruyne said about it: “I have been very lucky to be able to work alongside my teammates and score this many goals!”.
