Ryan Mallett had 21 appearances in the NFL
Ryan Mallett, the former NFL quarterback, tragically lost his life in what seems to be a drowning incident at the tender age of 35.
Having represented the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens in his professional career, Mallett was vacationing with his girlfriend in Florida when the incident occurred.
He was selected in the third round of the NFL draft in 2011 and served as the back-up to Tom Brady for the Patriots from 2011 to 2013.
Following his retirement from the sport in 2017, Mallett transitioned to a coaching role at a high school in his native Arkansas.
Recent US media reports have revealed that rip currents have claimed the lives of at least 11 people along the US Gulf Coast over the past fortnight.
The Sheriff’s Office in Okaloosa County reported that Mallett was part of a group of people reportedly in distress offshore in the coastal town of Destin when he disappeared underwater on Tuesday afternoon.
Lifeguards retrieved him from the water, but unfortunately, he was not breathing and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
“We have lost a remarkable individual. Ryan, thank you for everything,” Brady posted on his social media.
“Ryan was a stellar individual and a faithful teammate,” Baltimore stated in a press release. “His vibrant personality was contagious, and his enthusiasm and love for the team were evident throughout his time as a Raven.”
Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh expressed: “Ryan was a member of our family. His affection for his teammates and his commitment to cherishing and making the most of every football day here will always remain in my memory.”
The head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the news. Burnley investor and former Texans teammate JJ Watt, who caught Mallett’s first touchdown pass, stated, “This is terrible news to hear… He was taken from us far too soon.”
In his 21-game career in the NFL, Mallett threw for 1,835 yards and achieved nine touchdowns.
