Is Steph Houghton’s World Cup Dream Still Alive? England Boss Wiegman Offers Hope

by admin

Steph Houghton was chosen to be in the British team for the 2021 Olympics. Head coach Sarina Wiegman said that Steph’s chances of joining England at the World Cup were not high, but she would not close off the possibility of her being picked. Steph has never played under Wiegman and was removed as captain by Leah Williamson from Arsenal last year. The coach commented that Steph has done a lot for the sport, making it difficult for them to let go of her completely.

Everyone is working hard and so is she. She definitely wants to come back in the England squad, but sadly I had to leave some players out. That’s always difficult, but I try to explain why I made those decisions.

Earlier this week Houghton from Manchester City said it was very difficult mentally to be excluded from the team.

She was the captain of England for 8 years and said to a radio show that she wanted an ending to this issue. She also added that she did her best in March and April, but it wasn’t enough since nobody was happy with it.

England Manager Wiegman has a lot of defensive players to choose from for this year’s tournament that will be held in Australia and New Zealand during 20 July to 20 August.

Williamson, the team’s captain, and Chelsea’s Millie Bright are likely to play together at center back. Other players on the squad such as Alex Greenwood from Manchester City, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Jess Carter from Arsenal, and Maya Le Tissier from Manchester United were also named.

“Right now, it’s hard for Houghton because I don’t want to remove the players who are playing really well from their position. That means the chances of them going to the World Cup is not very high, but I still won’t shut that door completely since everybody should have a chance in international football. For now, though, I’m making different choices.”
