Two-time Classic race winner, Martin Dwyer, has confirmed his retirement from horse racing, owing to an unhealed knee injury.
The Aintree-born Dwyer, now 48, guided Sir Percy to victory at Epsom in 2006, marking his second Classic win after his triumphant 2003 Oaks ride on Casual Look.
Facing the reality of his situation, Dwyer expressed, “My career has ended, and it’s time to move forward.” Throughout his illustrious career, Dwyer claimed more than 1,500 victories.
In related news, Auguste Rodin clinched O’Brien’s 100th Classic triumph.
Dwyer’s career came to an abrupt halt in March 2022 after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and hasn’t been able to ride since.
“Verbalizing it is challenging. I’ve been grappling with this injury for some time now,” Dwyer shared with Racing TV.
Despite his vigorous rehab efforts, Dwyer’s surgeon confirmed after a recent operation that his knee wouldn’t regain the stability or strength required for professional riding.
“It’s simply the reality of the situation, and I need to face it,” he continued.
Dwyer, who secured victories in the King Edward VII Stakes, Great Voltigeur Stakes, and Coronation Cup on Pyledriver, trained by his father-in-law William Muir, expressed his desire to retire on his own terms.
“I wished for a grand farewell, similar to Frankie [Dettori’s] world tour, but my reality would likely be Wolverhampton and Southwell,” he stated.
He described the past year as challenging, but Dwyer is ready to embrace his next journey.
