Jon Rahm from Spain stayed focused and calm to win his first Masters Championship. This happened on an exciting day when he was competing against American Brooks Koepka. The final leaderboard of the tournament looked like this: Jon Rahm in 1st place with 12 points, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka tied for 2nd with 8 points, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth and Russell Henley tied for 3rd with 7 points. Other players included Viktor Hovland (Norway, 6 points), Scott Scheffler (US, 4 points) Matthew Fitzpatrick (England, 4 points), Justin Rose (England, -2 points), Shane Lowry (Ireland, -2 points), Stewart Bennett (US as a amateur player*, -2 points), Tommy Fleetwood (England +4 points) and Tyrrell Hatton (England +4). *Amateur players are not professionals.
Koepka and Phil Mickelson ended up in the same place after their great performances: Koepka with 8 under and Mickelson with 7 under. Other golfers, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, were just one shot behind. Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion of this year’s Masters tournament, finished at par along with another golfer from UK, Matt Fitzpatrick. He was the top British player.
Rahm became the fourth Spanish player to ever win the Masters tournament and his victory was a very emotional moment as it fell on what would have been Seve Ballesteros’ 66th birthday. Seve had won two Masters titles in 1980 and 1983. Rahm, who had recently won at the 2021 US Open, said that he felt something special when he hit his third shot of the 18th hole. He also mentioned that Seve was an important part of golfing history, which is why he plays the sport.
“It was really special to finish it on the 40th anniversary of when he won his second Masters and also on his birthday.”
“Jon Rahm’s Flawless Performance at the Masters Earns Him The Prestigious Green Jacket!”
Rahm was predicted to do well at the tournament, just like Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland and world number one Scheffler. Rahm had already achieved a lot this year – he won three times on the PGA Tour and got top ten finishes in four out of his six previous Masters attempts. So everyone expected him to perform well at Augusta, too – and sure enough, Rahm did not disappoint!
Jon Rahm started his tournament on Thursday with a double bogey, but then he kept it together by playing flawlessly otherwise. He demonstrated his amazing driving skills while impressing everyone with his cool-headed putting to achieve an opening round of 65, followed by two more rounds 69 and 73. This remarkable feat earned him the prestigious Green Jacket, along with the title of world’s number one golfer.
He had a good lead of four shots with only four holes left to play. Even when his ball ended up in the trees on the 18th hole, he managed to stay calm and make an awesome chip shot that put him within a few feet away from par.
“I achieved an amazing par that would have made Seve proud. He was definitely watching over me and I could feel it,” said Rahm, who is 28.
“This win was all for Seve. I’m sure he had a hand in helping make it happen!”
After holing out the last putt, Rahm couldn’t help but pump his fists and smile up to the sky.
His family – his wife Kelley and two sons Kepa and Eneko – immediately ran to him on the 18th green when he won, then he was congratulated by both friends and family.
One of these people who congratulated him was Jose Maria Olazabal, another Masters champion who acted as one of Rahm’s teachers.
Rahm Wins Masters, Koepka Feels “Ho-Hum” as Poor Driving Causes Defeat
What was expected to be a close competition between Rahm and Koepka ended up being a smooth and successful win for Rahm. Koepka’s poor last round was an important factor in this victory as well. He was trying to grab his fifth major game title and the first since 2019, despite not playing 72-hole events in recent months because he chose to play on the Saudi-sponsored LIV Golf Tour.
The LIV tournaments last for 54 holes, but Brooks Koepka had already done really well before the Masters: He won the event in Miami and was awarded $4 million – which is more than Jon Rahm’s winning prize of $3.24 million at the first major of the year.
Unfortunately, his driving wasn’t accurate during the final round and that cost him a chance to overcome Rahm.
Sky Sports asked Koepka how he felt after he couldn’t keep his lead. He said he felt “ho-hum” because he didn’t play that great and made bad shots. At the end Koepka was trying to make birdies even though the other player was leading which is really hard. He said second place isn’t fun, so it’s motivation for him to try harder next time.
Phil Mickelson’s Amazing Comeback in the Last LIV Golf Event
It had been a while since Phil Mickelson made it to the top 20 in any LIV Golf event, which hosts 48 players.
But in front of the last two participants, a surprising battle was initiated when lots of former major champions were ready to take advantage of any mistakes.
And three-time Masters champion Mickelson, 52 years old, became their main competitor with five birdies in just seven holes!
Last year, Mickelson didn’t compete in the tournament due to his decision to take a break from golf after saying something that caused controversy about a project linked to Saudi Arabia.
Although he returned, Mickelson proved he was back up to form with lots of cheers coming in from the spectators during his final birdie – this score helped him tie for second place with Koepka and also become the oldest player ever to rank top five in Masters history.
He said he was having a ton of fun playing golf. He finished the round with some birdies, and didn’t care much about the outcome because it was still an awesome day! Being part of such a big championship and performing at the level he did was even better!
Phil Mickelson managed to take the lead in the tournament while his playing partner Jordan Spieth followed closely behind, both having started off with 2 birdies and added 3 more as they made their way around the course.
2018 champion Patrick Reed had a setback on the second hole when he got a ‘double-bogey seven’ but then made up for it by getting 8 birdies and settling with a score of 68 alongside Spieth at 7 under which is 4th place together with another American player Russell Henley.
