Manchester United Finalizes £72m Transfer of Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta

Rasmus Hojlund transfer

After his transfer from Sturm Graz to Atalanta the previous summer, Danish forward Rasmus Hojlund is set to join Manchester United for £72m.

Manchester United has secured a deal with Serie A club Atalanta for the 20-year-old Danish striker, Rasmus Hojlund, for an initial fee of £64m, which could potentially rise to £72m with add-ons.

Hojlund’s transfer to Manchester United comes after a season with Atalanta where he scored 10 goals in 34 games after joining the Italian club in August 2022.

United plans to sign Hojlund for a five-year term, with a provision for an extra season.

This acquisition of Hojlund marks the third signing by United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, during this transfer window, following the arrival of Chelsea’s Mason Mount for £55m and goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2m.

Despite attempts by United to keep the cost under £60m, Hojlund was always the top pick for Ten Hag’s striker position.

What do we know about the imminent Red Devil Hojlund?

In contrast, United had refrained from pursuing Tottenham’s Harry Kane, considering the deal for the English captain would be too costly and complex to execute.

While there are still final steps to finalize the transfer of Hojlund, it is not expected that there will be issues with the personal terms.

Ten Hag’s desire for a new striker before the season kick-off has been met, and United believes that with the signings of Mount, Onana, and Hojlund, they’ve completed the majority of their summer transfer activities.

With these transactions, United’s total expenditure comes to a base of £166.2m, which could potentially increase to £180m.

Paris St-Germain, the reigning Ligue 1 champions, were also reported to have shown interest in Hojlund as a possible substitute for Kylian Mbappe, the French captain, whose future is uncertain.

Hojlund’s professional career started at Copenhagen, where he made his debut in the Danish Superliga at the age of 17 in 2020 before moving to Sturm Graz in Austria two years later.

Hojlund stayed in the Austrian Bundesliga for only six months after joining Sturm in January 2022, scoring every other match with a total of nine goals in 17 appearances.

His impressive performance earned him a £15m move to Atalanta, a tenfold increase from what Sturm Graz paid for him just six months earlier.

Hojlund made his first international appearance in 2022, scoring six times in six matches, all of which were for the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Assuming the transfer is finalized promptly, Hojlund could be eligible to play in United’s last pre-season friendlies against Lens at Old Trafford next Saturday and Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday.

Manchester United’s first match of the 2023-24 Premier League season will be a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, 14 August at 20:00 BST.

Man, 72m! Hojlund better be worth the dough, but I trust Ten Hag’s judgement. Mount and Onana were top buys, too.
