Manchester United Seals £47.2m Transfer of Andre Onana from Inter Milan

Andre Onana, the former Ajax goalkeeper who won three league titles under Erik ten Hag, has now reunited with the manager at Manchester United.

Manchester United has secured the signature of Andre Onana from Inter Milan, with a deal worth £47.2m (55m euro). The 27-year-old Cameroonian has signed a five-year contract that includes an option for a 12-month extension.

The deal comprises an initial £43.8m with a potential addition of £3.4m in add-ons. The former Ajax shot-stopper is expected to join the United squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.

“I consider it a remarkable honour to join Manchester United,” Onana said, adding that his journey to this point wasn’t without obstacles. He is set to replace David de Gea as United’s primary goalkeeper after the Spaniard’s 12-year tenure ended in July.

“The experience of walking out at Old Trafford to defend our goal and contribute to the team will be awe-inspiring,” Onana stated. He looks forward to his new journey with new teammates, new challenges, and intends to establish his own legacy amongst United’s esteemed goalkeepers.

Onana reminisced about his previous successful run under United’s manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax, which included three league titles, and stated his excitement to collaborate with him once more.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper had a successful stint at Inter Milan, which he joined in July 2022, where he helped the team reach the Champions League final. Despite losing 1-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City, he expressed his readiness to contribute to the success he believes ten Hag is striving for at Manchester United.

Onana boasted an impressive record of 104 clean sheets in 255 club appearances, including 13 in the Champions League last season, the most by any goalkeeper. He bid farewell to Inter Milan on social media stating, “I don’t know if I was the best, but I always gave my best.”

Manchester United’s football director, John Murtough, expressed his confidence in Onana. He believes Onana is one of the world’s top goalkeepers and will contribute significantly to the winning mentality within the squad, further developing his skills over the years.

Onana retired from international football in December after a dispute with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song during the World Cup.

He highlighted Onana’s exceptional performance during the Champions League final against Manchester City and his adeptness in modern goalkeeping, which involves the goalkeeper initiating attacks.

Stone contrasted Onana’s skills with de Gea’s, stating that while de Gea excelled at shot-saving, Onana would have to get used to the physicality and leniency of aerial challenges in the Premier League. Stone concluded that if Onana meets these challenges successfully, he would prove to be an inspired signing.
