Last year’s victor over Jerwin Ancajas, Martinez (pictured on the left), retains the title
Argentina’s own Fernando Martinez emerged victorious in a match against Jade Bornea, successfully holding onto his IBF world super-flyweight title in Minneapolis.
The 31-year-old Argentine managed to inflict a severe cut on the right ear of the Filipino challenger in the ninth round, leading to the referee halting the match at the beginning of the eleventh round.
This victory contributes to Martinez’s undefeated streak of 16 bouts, while marking the first professional defeat for the 28-year-old Bornea.
“I was persistently targeting the ear which ultimately ended the bout,” Martinez stated. He continued confidently, “The stronger fighter was victorious, and that was me.”
Martinez initially claimed the title from fellow Filipino boxer Jerwin Ancajas the previous year and successfully defended his title in a rematch last October.
