Eyioma Uwazurike (right), who played in eight matches during his debut season following his fourth-round selection in last year’s NFL draft, is the latest player to be hit with a suspension for contravening the league’s gambling rules.
The defensive lineman for Denver Broncos, aged 25, has received an indefinite suspension after being found guilty of betting on league matches throughout his inaugural season in 2022.
Uwazurike’s suspension will last for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of appealing for reinstatement no sooner than 24 July 2024.
This year has seen an increase in such disciplinary actions, with five players receiving suspensions in April and another three given bans for the 2023 season last month.
In a statement, the Broncos affirmed their commitment to upholding the integrity of the game, saying, “Our organisation has fully collaborated with the investigation and considers issues related to the game’s integrity with the utmost seriousness. We will persist in equipping every member of our organisation with the necessary education, resources, and support to ensure adherence to the NFL’s gambling policy.”
The Atlanta Falcons’ wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, also missed the 2022 season due to a similar violation but was granted reinstatement in March.
In related news, the Detroit Lions released Quintez Cephus, CJ Moore, and Stanley Berryhill following their suspension in April, while the Indianapolis Colts let go of Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry after their suspension for the 2023 season. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans’ right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere received a suspension for betting on other sports at the team’s facility.

This is a huge blow, Uwazurike was a solid addition to the broncos defensive line. Hope we can bounce back from this.

Once again shows the importance of education about these gambling policies. Ridley, now Uwazurike. NFL needs to do more to prevent these situations.
