Kylian Mbappe, who has secured five French titles during his tenure at PSG, has been surprisingly left behind by the team.
The French footballers’ union is alleging “moral harassment” against Paris St-Germain for excluding Kylian Mbappe from their pre-season Asian tour. The union has also threatened potential legal action in response to the incident.
As PSG’s top scorer of all time, Mbappe has notified the club of his decision not to renew his contract, which has only a year remaining. The club is eager to trade Mbappe, aged 24, immediately to earn a transfer fee, yet Mbappe intends to fulfil his contract term.
Mbappe, who joined PSG from Monaco in 2017, came at a hefty cost of £165.7m.
Following his exclusion from the team travelling to Japan and South Korea, the National Union of Professional Footballers issued a statement saying, “Every player should have equal work conditions as any other professional.
The UNFP wants to emphasize to managers that putting an employee under pressure – by deteriorating their working conditions, for instance – in order to make them quit or accept the employer’s terms, is a form of moral harassment, something that French law vehemently opposes.
The UNFP retains the right to pursue civil and criminal charges against any club acting in such a manner.”
For the past six years, Mbappe has been a significant asset for PSG, scoring a whopping 212 goals in 260 matches, and earning or sharing the last five Ligue 1 Golden Boots.
His prowess led France to victory in the 2018 World Cup and he scored a hat-trick in the final against Argentina in 2022, although they were defeated.
Despite predictions of him joining Real Madrid for free at the end of his previous contract in 2022, he stunned everyone by signing a new two-year contract with PSG.
Following his decision not to further extend this contract, PSG asserts that he can no longer be a part of their playing group.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the Chairman, stated it’s “impossible” for Mbappe to leave for free in 2024.
This summer, Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona boss, replaced Christophe Galtier as manager of the Ligue 1 champions.
