Portugal establishes a confrontation with the reigning champions USA for a spot in the Women’s World Cup last-16 by triumphing impressively over Vietnam.
Portugal, being debutants, clinched their first World Cup win with goals from Telma Encarnacao and Kika Nazareth, marking their debut World Cup goals.
Portugal will advance to the knockout stages if they manage to upset the four-time World Cup champions, USA.
Vietnam’s journey in the World Cup will come to an end following their defeat at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Portugal’s final Group E match against the United States is set for Tuesday at 08:00 BST, while Vietnam aims for their first World Cup point and goal against the Netherlands concurrently.
Portugal manager Francisco Neto notes, “The United States will be a totally different game,” adding that there are many aspects to improve despite their victory.
Earlier on Thursday, the USA drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Wellington.
Portugal Achieves Historic First Victory
As the highest-ranked of the eight World Cup debutants at 21st on the Fifa list, Portugal boasts a blend of experience in defense and promising young talent upfront, alongside depth in their squad as illustrated by Neto making seven starting XI changes for Thursday’s match.
While Vietnam’s defense was disorganized and vulnerable, Portugal was consistently sharp down the flanks and abundant with creative ideas.
They held a 2-0 lead within the first 21 minutes and could have amplified their lead given their dominating play throughout the game.
Their first World Cup goal was achieved seven minutes into the game when Lucia Alves found Encarnacao with a low cross, who converted from close range.
Nazareth, only 20, and already with seven goals for Portugal, doubled the lead with a neat finish past Kim Tranh.
Although stating the United States will be more organized and defensively savvy than Vietnam may seem obvious, Portugal’s young, talented, and fast squad will be aiming to cause the biggest upset in women’s football history.
Vietnam Bow Out After Being Outclassed
Vietnam’s World Cup exit was disappointing, especially after putting up a brave defensive display against the USA.
Mai Duc Chung’s team seemed conflicted – eager to seize their best chance at a first World Cup win, yet desiring to maintain their robust 5-4-1 system, which led to confusion on the field, easily exploited by the Portuguese.
Vietnam, 32nd in the Fifa rankings, fell far short in Hamilton, as coach Chung admitted.
The Vietnamese team managed their first shot on target at a World Cup – by Bich Thuy after 43 minutes – and even a touch in the opponent’s box, something they didn’t achieve against the Americans.
