Aston Villa and Norwich City are yet to confirm their new managers. The Athletic reported on Monday that Rangers’ manager Steven Gerrard is a strong contender but, according to well-placed sources, “multiple options will be considered”.

It is understood Norwich, meanwhile, have narrowed down their options to two final candidates.

Elsewhere, the start of the international break has brought about some complications for certain countries and clubs.

Manchester United's Paul Pogba is at risk of being out of action until next year after picking up a right thigh injury with the French team. Meanwhile, five Germany players are in quarantine after a player tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of their World Cup qualifiers.

In the Women's Champions League Chelsea thrashed Swiss outfit Servette 7-0 to sit top of group A after their third group-stage game while PSG lead group B following their 4-0 win against Real Madrid.

Reigning champions Barcelona are back in action tonight as they take on Hoffenheim, Arsenal travel to Danish side HB Koge while five-time winners Lyon host last year's semi-finalists Bayern Munich.

Lyon came from behind to snatch all three points thanks to Amandine Henry's 86th-minute winner.

Antonio Conte is already making his mark at Tottenham.

The players feel energised by his arrival, with a clear focus on improving fitness levels.

Barcelona top group C in the Women's Champions League after a comfortable 4-0 win over Hoffenheim.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are three points adrift of the reigning champions following their 5-1 victory over HB Koge.

Jonas Eidevall's side had a slow start with only Steph Catley scoring in the first half. However, the floodgates opened after the break with goals from Nikita Parris, Caitlin Foord, Anna Patten and Jordan Nobbs.

An update from the England camp, Declan Rice has withdrawn from the England squad meaning he will miss the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualification matches against Albania and San Marino.

The West Ham midfielder has pulled out of Gareth Southgate's side due to illness.

Marcus Rashford and James Ward-Prowse have also pulled out with Emile Smith Rowe earning his first senior call-up.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw have not yet joined Southgate's group. They continue to be assessed after dental surgery and concussion respectively.

Aston Villa are edging ever closer to appointing Steven Gerrard as their next manager.

Breakthrough talks have taken place over the last 24 hours are expected to get their man.

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Julian Ward, his assistant, will replace him.

The Athletic revealed in August that Edwards, who initially joined Liverpool as head of performance and analysis in 2011 and was promoted to the role of sporting director five years later, was ready to embark on a new challenge.

Human rights concerns have been a prominent issue regarding PIF’s purchase of Newcastle.

When asked about Saudi human rights, Howe replied: “To me this is a football decision.”

“I’m absolutely delighted to be manager of Newcastle and that's what my focus is on. My focus is football; running the team, managing the players. That’s all I'm going to talk about and all I'm going to think about.”

Eddie Howe has been “very impressed” by Newcastle United owners’ ambitious vision for the club.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen does not believe he's in a "bad situation" at Chelsea, with his contract expiring at the end of this season.

When asked by Danish outlet BT when there would be clarity with respect to his situation in west London, Christensen said, “hopefully soon”.

“I do not know why everyone thinks it is a bad situation,” he added. “I’m still happy and I enjoy playing football.”

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva will miss Portugal's trip to Ireland tomorrow.

Head coach Fernando Santos announced the news earlier, saying the midfielder has "muscle complaints". Santos did add that he hopes to have Silva available for the visit of Serbia on Sunday.

PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes Ligue 1 is a more physical competition than the Premier League.

In an interview with Ligue 1, Pochettino did not say that the French league was better, but said he thinks the games have a more physical edge.

"I think because of this characteristic of the football here in France that is why the French player can adapt very quick to the Premier League because they are very similar, no?" the former Spurs manager added.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Aminata Diallo is in police custody following an assault on her team-mates in the women’s side.

PSG say the attack occurred last Thursday evening, with Diallo taken into custody by Versailles Police on Wednesday morning.

Reports in France suggest that an assaulted player was Kheira Hamraoui, who was allegedly dragged out of her car by two masked individuals that beat her legs.

Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky has completed his purchase of a 27 per cent stake in West Ham.

Kretinsky said: "I am delighted this detailed process has now been successfully concluded. I am passionate about football.

"I greatly appreciate and respect the exceptional history and tradition of West Ham United as well as its loyal and passionate supporter base and also the highly inspiring role it plays in many social programmes and initiatives.

Eddie Howe will be officially unveiled as Newcastle head coach this afternoon.

He has a big task ahead of him, with Newcastle 19th in the Premier League and the only winless side remaining.

And despite the fact that last time Howe was in the division, Howe was relegated with Bournemouth, The Athletic's Chris Waugh believes Newcastle fans can be cautiously optimistic about their new man.

Steven Gerrard is the bookmakers favourite to take over at Aston Villa, following the departure of Dean Smith at the weekend.

Gerrard's stock his risen significantly while he's been in charge of Rangers, and The Athletic's Jordan Campbell detailed in May how the former Liverpool captain masterminded the Glasgow club to their first title in years.

The Uber Eats lives on!

The French LFP announced that the Uber Eats naming partnership with Ligue has been renewed for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.

The food delivery company has sponsored the French league since 2020.
