Shaka Hislop Grateful for the Support Following On-Air Incident at Real Madrid vs AC Milan Match
With a history playing for West Ham, Reading, Newcastle, and Portsmouth in England, Hislop is well-known in football
Former goalkeeper for West Ham, Shaka Hislop, expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support after he unexpectedly collapsed on-air this Sunday while in California.
Hislop, now 54, was providing analysis for US-based broadcaster ESPN when he unexpectedly tripped and fell during a pre-match interview on the field.
“I must admit, that was quite a clumsy moment,” Hislop commented in a Twitter video shared on Monday.
“These past 24 hours have been quite an experience. Life occasionally throws you a curveball that forces you to pause, and this was definitely mine,” Hislop said.
Hislop further mentioned: “My next step is to consult with top medical experts and heed their advice.
“I have an immense amount to be thankful for – my wife, my kids, my family, my loved ones, my friends, individuals I’ve interacted with over the years, even those I’ve lost touch with who have reached out either directly or indirectly – I appreciate it.”
With a record of playing 121 games for West Ham across two stints from 1998-2002 and 2005-2006 and earning 26 caps for Trinidad and Tobago, Hislop also extended his thanks to his fellow broadcasters for their assistance.
Dan Thomas, co-presenter with Hislop during the Real Madrid and AC Milan match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, promptly called for help as the broadcast went into a commercial break.
With the reported temperature in California on Sunday hitting around 30C, it remains uncertain if heat contributed to Hislop’s sudden collapse.
“I want to extend my thanks to Dan, and the entire ESPN team – from camera operators to the Rose Bowl’s medical staff, who all reacted promptly and provided me with the necessary care. Thank you,” said Hislop, who also had stints with Reading, Newcastle, and Portsmouth.
“I’ve realized now that despite our occasional disagreements, I can count on the full support from each one of you. I’m eager to return and continue doing what I love the most.”
