Sunny Edwards, the reigning IBF flyweight champion from Great Britain, recently defended his title against Andres Campos on June 10, emerging victorious with a unanimous decision.
Edwards is now set to face off against American boxing sensation Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez in a flyweight unification championship bout, with both parties having agreed to the terms. Edwards had previously expressed intent to ascend to a higher weight division if Rodriguez were to decline his challenge.
While the date and venue for this highly-anticipated matchup have not yet been confirmed, Eddie Hearn, Edwards’ promoter, announced on Thursday that the agreement for the fight has been officially inked.
“Can’t wait to represent Great Britain in one of the most significant flyweight matches in history,” Edwards expressed in a tweet.
Rodriguez, the current WBO champion, maintains an immaculate professional record, boasting 18 victories in as many fights. Edwards matches this impressive record with his own, also remaining undefeated in his 20 bouts to date.
Following his win of the vacant WBO title against Mexico’s Cristian Gonzalez in April, Rodriguez declared that Edwards was his “only option” for his forthcoming match.
“This is a genuinely exciting match – one of the best in boxing. Kudos to both fighters,” Hearn expressed on Twitter.
