British tennis player Andy Murray rallied from a set deficit to defeat Jason Kubler, securing a spot in the Surbiton Trophy semi-finals.

36-year-old Murray triumphed 3-6 6-3 6-4, paving the way for a match with the 2022 winner, Australian Jordan Thompson.

Being the second seed, Murray is the sole seeded player still competing in the Surrey-based tournament.

The three-time Grand Slam winner Murray chose to bypass the French Open to concentrate on the grass-court season, with aspirations to be seeded at Wimbledon next month.

Murray acknowledged the tough competition, stating, “I knew it was going to be hard.” He praised Kubler’s performance, noting his varied play and junior success, yet also mentioned his history of injury struggles.

Despite challenging wind conditions, Murray was satisfied with his performance during the crucial moments. He expressed his appreciation for the unique experience of playing in such tennis club environments, stating, “Most of the tournaments you play on tour are in purpose-built facilities whereas coming here, you all love tennis and are probably members, so it’s always nice to play at clubs like this.”

Reflecting on his run in the competition, he said, “It has been a good run so far and hopefully I can go a bit further than last year [when he lost in the semi-final].”

In 2022, American Denis Kudla defeated Murray in the semi-finals of the Surbiton Trophy.

Currently world-ranked 43rd, Murray began by breaking first in the third game, although this advantage was short-lived as he lost his next service game against the fifth-seeded Australian.

In the eighth game, Murray’s serve was broken once more, and 30-year-old Kubler served out the opening set. Nevertheless, Murray fought back by breaking Kubler’s serve in the eighth game of the second set and then twice early in the deciding set.

Murray stands as the final British player in the men’s tournament after the exits of Dan Evans, Liam Broady, Mark Whitehouse, Daniel Cox, Billy Harris, Ryan Peniston and Harry Wendelken in the first two rounds.

The defending champion, Thompson, triumphed over his Australian compatriot Rinky Hijikata 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 in his quarter-final match.

Women’s Finals to See At Least One British Contestant

In the women’s bracket, three out of the four semi-finalists hail from Britain.

Katie Boulter, poised to become the new British number one if she makes it to the final, superseding Emma Raducanu, overpowered Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 7-5 6-2.

Despite losing three consecutive games after leading 4-1 in the first set, Boulter regained the advantage by breaking in the 12th game, taking the set. The second set saw less drama, with Boulter breaking Golubic’s serve in the second and eighth games, thereby securing her victory.

Boulter’s semi-final match is against Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer. A victory would lead to an all-British final, as Katie Swan competes against Yuriko Lily Miyazaki in the other semi-final.

Swan recovered from a set behind to outclass Germany’s top seed Tatjana Maria 3-6 6-3 6-4. In contrast, Miyazaki outplayed fellow Briton Is
