Discussing Bairstow’s errors, McCullum said, “Those were challenging mistakes. But considering the circumstances, I believe Jonny performed exceptionally well. Observing his progression throughout the match, he seemed to find a natural rhythm. Besides, his batting prowess, particularly coming in at seven, provides us with a significant advantage.”
Following an injury to Jack Leach, retired off-spinner Moeen Ali made a comeback to participate in the Ashes. He took three wickets in Birmingham, but a severe cut to his spinning finger often disrupted his bowling.
McCullum noted that Moeen’s condition will be closely monitored, and if deemed fit, he will play in the upcoming match at Lord’s.
“Moeen did an extraordinary job,” McCullum praised, “He’s elated to return to Test cricket, and we owe thanks to both the game itself and to Stokes and the team for cultivating an atmosphere that inspires participation. We’re optimistic that we can manage Moeen’s finger injury over the coming days, and if all goes well, he’ll be included in the next match.”
