Donny van de Beek's future

Van de Beek strikes a spectacular right-foot volley in the second half at Murrayfield to secure the victory against Lyon.

The future of Donny van de Beek, Manchester United’s midfielder, at the club remains uncertain. The 26-year-old Dutch player, who has had difficulty securing his place at Old Trafford since his £35m transfer in September 2020, voiced his doubts.

After a loan period at Everton in 2022 and a return to United, van de Beek missed the latter half of the previous season due to a severe knee injury.

Speaking about his future after scoring the winning goal in United’s second pre-season match against Lyon, following a six-month recovery, van de Beek said, “It is hard to predict my future. I’ve recently returned from an injury and just completed my first match. I am fit, but the need to continue pushing hard remains. Let’s see what unfolds. A potential transfer is also on the cards – all options are open.”

In a thrilling match in Edinburgh, van de Beek’s goal – an excellent right-foot volley early in the second half, striking Daniel Gore’s right-wing cross past Lyon’s substitute goalkeeper Remy Riou into the left corner – was the highlight of a sunny afternoon.

His celebration suggested relief after a period of frustrating inactivity. “It’s a significant moment personally. Scoring a goal is always a pleasure, but those who’ve experienced such injuries know the wait for this moment. Even if it’s just a friendly, it’s a momentous event for me, underscoring my love for football,” he added.

Van de Beek also expressed his excitement over the forthcoming arrival of his ex-Ajax teammate Andre Onana. United has confirmed a £47.2m (55m euros) agreement with Inter Milan for the goalkeeper to replace David de Gea.

“My expectations for Andre are high. We played together for years. He is an excellent goalkeeper and personality, adept with his feet and the goal line. We still communicate occasionally,” said the Dutch midfielder.

With manager Erik ten Hag successfully acquiring one of his summer targets, the match before 48,484 spectators in Edinburgh underscored United’s need for a new striker.

In the absence of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, United began without a recognized striker. Jadon Sancho assumed a central role, accompanied by Antony and Amad Diallo as part of a front three. They connected well initially but lacked finishing prowess, missing four opportunities in the first 10 minutes.

In the second half, apart from goalkeeper Matej Kovar, ten Hag changed his entire team. Fred assumed the captaincy from Raphael Varane and veteran centre-back Jonny Evans made his second United debut.

United’s best chance to extend their lead was through 18-year-old Isak Hansen-Aaroen, but his curling attempt was denied.

The United team is set to fly from Edinburgh to New York, beginning their four-match US tour with a game against Arsenal in New Jersey. The team named a full-strength squad for the trip, including Harry Maguire, despite uncertainty about his future.

Andre Onana, the Cameroon goalkeeper, is also set to join the squad once his move from Inter Milan concludes. Meanwhile, Fred will stay in the UK to manage a personal issue before joining the team on their tour.

i’m not convinced by the pre-season games, need a clinical striker ASAP. Van de Beek’s goal is a good sign tho, he needs more game time.

Our defence should’ve been better. VDB’s volley was amazing tho, gotta admit.
