The 2022 inaugural LIV event champion, Charl Schwartzel, pictured with Yasir Al-Rumayyan and LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, is one of the notable figures connected to the merger.
Prominent personalities in the golf world have been requested to appear at a US Senate hearing that aims to probe into the merger of the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, PIF Governor Yasir al-Rumayyan, and LIV Golf’s Greg Norman have been called to the hearing set for 11th July.
According to US Senator Richard Blumenthal, the purpose of the hearing is to “disclose the facts” surrounding the merger.
Blumenthal added that the investigation will delve into the implications of “Saudi’s takeover on this esteemed American establishment’s future and its relation to our national interest.”
Earlier this month, the PGA and DP World Tour announced an unexpected merger with PIF.
The entities have concurred to amalgamate their business operations and rights into an unnamed for-profit corporation yet to be disclosed.
The new entity will be headed by Monahan as its CEO, and Al-Rumayyan – concurrently serving as Newcastle United’s chairman – will hold the chairman’s position.
The contentious merger proposal resulted in calls for Monahan’s resignation from his PGA leadership role during a heated players’ meeting prior to the Canadian Open. Despite being one of the sternest critics of LIV Golf, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy conceded that the merger would ultimately be “beneficial for golf.”
Currently, Monahan is on medical leave.
Senator Blumenthal, also the chair of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, further commented that “Americans are entitled to understanding the new entity’s structure and governance.”
