Croydon-native Wilfried Zaha, a prominent 30-year-old forward, is commemorated by a mural located on a residential building facing the Selhurst Park Stadium, Crystal Palace’s home ground.
Zaha, part of a consortium seeking to acquire AFC Croydon Athletic, could notably elevate the club’s prominence. AFC Croydon Athletic currently competes in the ninth level of English football.
“Increased visibility is a key advantage,” chairman Paul Smith expressed on BBC Radio London. He added, “Many locals aren’t even aware of our existence. This proposition undeniably presents an excellent prospect for both the club and the community.”
Also part of the consortium are Stormzy, a rapper with three number one albums and three Brit awards to his name, and Danny Young, a former head of player care at Palace. Like Zaha, Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Owuo Jr, also spent his formative years in the South London borough.
“Their involvement alone has already begun to heighten our club’s profile,” claimed Smith. He continued, “There’s been increased interest from young locals about joining our teams and inquiries concerning jerseys and season ticket sales.”
“This move also aims at creating opportunities for youth growing up in an area characterized by its challenges, high population density, and diverse culture. As the weeks and months progress, they’ll have the chance to elaborate more on their vision and plans. The focus is on building a sustainable club for the future.”
Croydon ‘a Talent-Rich Region’
AFC Croydon calls Mayfield Stadium in Thornton Heath home and concluded the previous season ranking 15th in the 20-team Combined Counties Premier Division South.
Founded in 2012, after Croydon Athletic dissolved, the club has remained supporter-owned.
“We are discreetly located behind Mitcham Road Cemetery. Some fans even dub the ground ‘The Crem’ due to its proximity to the crematorium,” Smith mentioned.
“Maintaining a club at step five of the non-league pyramid is challenging, especially with rising costs.
However, there’s a unanimous agreement that we’re heading in the right direction. We, as supporting club operators, yearn for success beyond just the first team.
“Past iterations have competed a couple of levels higher. It would be amazing to reclaim that standing.
“However, real success will only be achieved if we also address other matters and create opportunities for local youth to partake in our journey.
“Croydon is undoubtedly a talent-rich region, and it’s crucial to provide these talents the platform they deserve.”

If they can manage to get AFC Croydon up a few tiers, that’ll be an impressive feat. Non league footy is tougher than it looks. good luck to ’em
