Mac Allister scores with an ‘extraordinary’ backheel

Brighton midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, is poised to move to Liverpool for £55m after Brighton’s approval for him to undergo a medical.

The Argentine maestro was crucial in Brighton’s sixth-place Premier League finish last season, earning them a maiden European qualification.

At 24, Mac Allister has also significantly contributed to Argentina’s World Cup victory in December.

With the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool is keen on reinforcing their midfield this summer.

The Reds were unable to strike a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s English teenager, Jude Bellingham, due to his high price tag. Bellingham is also a target for Real Madrid.

Mac Allister’s influential role was apparent as Brighton attained their first European football spot in the club’s 122-year existence.

His contribution comprised of 40 matches and 12 goals, predominantly in a number 10 role, occasionally playing in more defensive midfield positions.

Brighton’s manager, Roberto de Zerbi, last month praised Mac Allister as a “tremendous player” deserving of “a superior level of play”.

Mac Allister transferred to Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019, before immediately returning to the Buenos Aires club on loan.

He debuted for the Seagulls in a goalless encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2020. Since then, he has played 112 matches and netted 20 goals for the club.

Mac Allister, capped 16 times for Argentina, was an integral part of their victorious 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar, including a goal in a 2-0 triumph over Poland in the group stages.
