Leroy Sane’s career first red card marks a turning point
In a surprising turn of events, Germany succumbed to Austria, marking their second consecutive loss under Julian Nagelsmann’s leadership.
Formerly at the helm of Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann kicked off his tenure with a win against the USA, followed by a stalemate with Mexico and a loss to Turkey.
Appointed in September with a contract running until July 2024, right before Germany hosts Euro 2024, the 36-year-old Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick.
Austria’s lead was initiated by Marcel Sabitzer, with Christoph Baumgartner later cementing the victory.
The German squad faced a significant setback when Leroy Sane, the ex-Manchester City player, received a red card in the 49th minute for his reaction to Phillipp Mwene’s criticism of a tackle.
Nagelsmann expressed his concerns to ZDF, a German broadcaster: “Our play lacks spontaneity. There’s a mountain of work ahead in every area. We must confront this reality but avoid a defeatist attitude.”
