On Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau crafted an extraordinary round in the annals of golf, scoring a rare 58 to secure the LIV Golf Greenbrier championship.

The 2020 US Open victor recorded an astounding 13 birdies and a single bogey to conclude the 54-hole event in West Virginia at 23 under par.

This score ties with the PGA Tour’s record for the lowest round, a feat achieved by Jim Furyk at TPC River Highlands, Connecticut, in 2016.

“This is probably the pinnacle of my golfing journey,” declared DeChambeau.

The round marks the lowest score ever recorded in the LIV series, which debuted in 2021.

“I can’t put it into words,” said DeChambeau. “I’ve dedicated so much time and effort into this, and I knew a significant moment would arise at some point. I just didn’t know when it would happen.”

Rounds of 58 in professional golf at the top level are exceedingly rare.

The Japan Tour has seen two such rounds: one by Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa in 2010 at The Crowns, and another by South Korea’s Kim Seong-hyeon in 2021 at the Golf Partner Pro-Am.

On the Web.com Tour in California in 2016, Germany’s Stephan Jager scored a 58, and Spain’s Alejandro del Rey matched this feat on the European Challenge Tour in Switzerland in 2021.

Several 58s have been achieved on developmental tours. Meanwhile, Ireland’s David Carey recorded a remarkable 57 at the Cervino Open on the Alps Tour’s third tier.

There have been 11 rounds of 59 on the PGA Tour, Annika Sorenstam from Sweden has the only 59 on the LPGA Tour, and English golfer Oliver Fisher has the singular 59 on the European Tour.

American DeChambeau, 29, eventually triumphed by a six-shot margin over Chile’s Mito Pereira, who completed with a 63.

The Old White course, the site of this week’s tournament, was the stage for a 59 scored by Australian Stuart Appleby during a PGA Tour event in 2010.

DeChambeau birdied 22 of his last 34 holes, achieving his first triumph since the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

This victory is DeChambeau’s first since the passing of his father, Jon, last November at the age of 63 following a long battle with kidney disease.

“He was with me the entire day today, without a doubt,” DeChambeau shared.

“The past few years have been incredibly challenging, but to come out on top with a 58… it’s unbelievable what I was capable of achieving. I’m over the moon.”
