The Queen’s Club in London witnessed the commencement of the Cinch Championships from 17th to 25th June. BBC Two and the Sport News Center website and app bring you live coverage and selected live text commentaries.
Making his first British grass court appearance since his semi-final bout at Wimbledon last year, Cameron Norrie claimed a resounding victory at Queen’s. The fifth-seeded Norrie secured a win against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4 7-6 (7-5) on the tournament’s first day.
Norrie’s fellow British player Ryan Peniston, a wildcard entrant who made it to the quarter-finals last year, also scored an impressive win. The world’s 265th ranked player astounded everyone by defeating the 37th-ranked French player, Ugo Humbert, 6-4 6-2.
Later on Monday, Britain’s second top-ranked male player, Dan Evans, will target a triple of home victories as he faces American Sebastian Korda. The day for the British players will end when wildcard Jan Choinski, ranked 167th, challenges Italian fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Andy Murray, the former world number one who just clinched the ATP Challenger tournament in Nottingham, will open his match on Tuesday. Murray, a five-time singles champion, will compete against Australian seventh seed Alex de Minaur in a notable step up in the competition.
Norrie, who lost in the French Open’s third round two weeks ago, made a triumphant return to home turf and is eager to recreate his electrifying performance at Wimbledon last year. The 27-year-old managed a robust victory in his first grass match since losing to Novak Djokovic, the eventual champion at SW19.
After successfully defeating Kecmanovic, Norrie expressed his satisfaction with returning to the grass court and playing in London. He admitted to some challenges in closing the match but overall expressed his joy with the win.
Up next, Norrie will face either Australian Jordan Thompson or Canada’s Milos Raonic, the 2016 Wimbledon runner-up.
Peniston, 27, was once ranked 123rd in the world and famously battled cancer as a child. His outstanding performance to reach the Queen’s quarter-finals last year brought his inspiring story to light.
Peniston, who now ranks outside the top 250, was given a wildcard at this year’s west London club. He lived up to this choice with another noteworthy win against Humbert.
Expressing his delight, Peniston revealed his comfort with returning to the court and his determination to play more at that level. In the second round, Peniston will compete against either Danish second seed Holger Rune or American Maxime Cressy.
