Despite guiding West Ham United to its first significant title in over four decades last season, David Moyes still hasn’t gotten his due credit, according to West Ham’s forward, Jarrod Bowen.
Now at 60, Moyes has notched an impressive record with the Hammers since his return for a second stint, including two top-seven league finishes, a spot in the Europa League semi-finals, and a triumphant Europa Conference League campaign.
Fast-forward to the present day, and West Ham are on fire, currently second on the Premier League table with seven points snatched from their first trio of matches.
“Comparing Moyes to any other manager who might have been at the helm? Good luck finding a close second,” Bowen divulged to 5 Live Sport.
When Moyes took the reins in December 2019, the East London club was barely dodging the relegation bullet, standing only a point and a spot away from the dreaded zone. Since then, under his stewardship, the club has not only avoided relegation but also achieved league finishes of 6th, 7th, and 14th, all while pocketing the Conference League title—their first major silverware since nabbing the FA Cup in 1980.
Bowen, who joined the Hammers from Hull in January 2020, noted, “When I first came on board, the club was practically walking on a relegation tightrope. Moyes not only kept the club afloat but also took us to heights like finishing in the top seven, reaching the Europa League semi-finals, and heck, we even won the Conference League. Despite all this, I feel like the guy’s still singing backup instead of lead vocals when it comes to credit.”
West Ham recently clinched a 3-1 victory over Brighton, featuring goals from Bowen himself, along with James Ward-Prowse and Michail Antonio.
“Ever since I’ve been part of this squad, it’s clear the magic really starts with the guy in the manager’s seat,” said Bowen. “His ethos permeates everything around the locker room and the training grounds. We’re talking discipline and daily regimens that everyone’s willingly signed up for. You can see the fruits of that collective commitment out there on the pitch.”
