In a thrilling series missing some of its veteran players, England narrowly defeated South Africa 53-50 in the series decider on Sunday.

In front of an enthusiastic Nottingham crowd of about 6,000, the English team, featuring several up-and-coming players, took an early lead and maintained it throughout the game.

The South African team rallied late in the game, but England held firm, capping off a year that saw them take home a silver medal at the Netball World Cup.

“It’s a unique feeling for many of these players who haven’t won a series before,” said head coach Jess Thirlby in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.

The series kicked off with England winning 54-51, followed by a comeback from South Africa, who are ranked sixth in the world, winning 61-59 on Saturday, leading to the nail-biting finale.

“Our defensive strategy was more aggressive right from the start,” Thirlby noted. “After yesterday’s game, we knew we had to rein them in.

“South Africa definitely challenged us, but today we were more adept at handling those critical moments.

“Looking ahead to 2024, we’re hoping for more successes like this, though we face a tough challenge come January.”

England looks forward to the Nations Cup next year, hosting teams including Uganda, New Zealand, and the current World Cup champions, Australia.

England’s rising star Funmi Fadoju, known for her agility despite being self-described as clumsy, idolizes Geva Mentor. She joined captain Fran Williams in defense, effectively limiting South African goal shooter Rolene Streutker, who had been the standout player in the previous match.

Although the visitors briefly took the lead, England had a five-goal advantage by the end of the first quarter. The gap narrowed to four by halftime, with England leading 42-38 at the end of the third quarter. The South African team mounted a comeback in the final stages, but England held on for the win.

Fran Williams, at 25, was recognized as the player of the match and the series. “I want this young team to grow comfortable with winning tight games,” she remarked to Sky Sports. “Learning to triumph under pressure is crucial for major tournaments.”

Norma Plummer, the 79-year-old Australian coach of South Africa, who is concluding her international coaching career, praised her team: “Considering England’s full-time program, I’m immensely proud of our team. We lost steam towards the end, but that’s expected when you’re not consistently playing at this level.”
