Juventus Announces Withdrawal from European Super League Project
The introduction of the European Super League sparked widespread protests outside Premier League stadiums. In light of recent developments, Juventus has now indicated its decision to withdraw from the controversial project.
After the initial collapse of the proposed league in October 2021, Juventus, along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, remained committed to the fundamental principles outlined in the plan. These principles aimed to establish clubs as key organizers of competitions, diminishing the influence of the European governing body, Uefa.
However, Juventus has now broken away from the collective stance.
The club has formally written to Real Madrid and Barcelona, expressing their desire for discussions centered on “the potential withdrawal of Juventus from the Super League Project.” The communication is set to take place, and Juventus has emphasized its intention to comply with legal requirements by continuing further dialogue and evaluating the outcomes.
Observers speculated that Juventus anticipated a favorable verdict from the European Courts of Justice regarding Uefa’s monopolistic control over competition organization, which would determine whether rival leagues established by clubs could result in their exclusion.
Recent months have been turbulent for Juventus, beginning with the Italian FA initially penalizing the club with a 15-point deduction for violating financial regulations. Although the punishment was eventually overturned, a subsequent hearing resulted in a 10-point deduction that Juventus accepted.
Adding to their woes, former player Paulo Dybala scored a last-minute goal for Roma, securing a Europa League spot at the expense of Juventus. Consequently, the Turin-based giants concluded their season in seventh place and will participate in the Europa Conference League. Without the 10-point deduction, they would have qualified for the prestigious Champions League, displacing AC Milan.
