Former World Number One, Justin Thomas, Narrowly Misses FedEx Cup Play-offs

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas, a twice-crowned US PGA Championship victor, experienced a blow at the final hole in the Wyndham Championship, missing the FedEx Cup play-off berth by merely a stroke.

Thomas, who secured the 2022 US PGA Championship, ended up tied at the 12th spot with an eleven-under at Sedgefield Country Club.

A tantalizing birdie was within reach on the 18th hole as his far-reaching chip ricocheted off the flagstick. Thomas expressed disappointment, acknowledging that the moment would have been much more thrilling had the ball found the hole.

After settling for a par at the final hole, the 30-year-old player faced uncertainty about his future in the tournament as his opponents continued their games at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Thomas, who kicked off the week at number 79 in the FedEx Cup rankings, aimed to penetrate the top 70 to qualify for the upcoming play-offs.

However, despite tying for the 12th spot, the two-time major champion only managed to ascend to the 71st spot, falling short by eight points from the 70th, Ben Griffin.

This marks the first time since his 2014 rookie season that Thomas will be absent from the play-offs. “I understand that this sport doesn’t owe anyone anything, but I feel my diligent efforts warranted it,” commented Thomas.

“I made some truly impressive shots when the situation called for it, executed great chips, and notably, a remarkable eagle putt on the 15th. Despite the circumstances on the 17th and 18th holes, I did my utmost,” he added.

Thomas, the FedEx Cup’s 2017 champion, was participating in the Wyndham event after being cut from his last seven starts five times and underperforming in this season’s majors, with two rounds exceeding 80.

Despite the season’s disappointing end, Thomas remains optimistic about earning a spot on the USA’s Ryder Cup team.

The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled for 29th September through 1st October at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy.
