Gerardo 'Tata' Martino Inter Miami Appointment

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, the mastermind behind Atlanta United’s 2018 MLS Cup victory, is set to take the reins at Inter Miami.

Inter Miami has announced the appointment of the former Barcelona head coach, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, reuniting him with Lionel Messi. Martino will take over from Phil Neville, the former Manchester United defender who was dismissed on June 1st.

The 60-year-old Argentine has been without a job since parting ways with Mexico following their 2022 World Cup group stage elimination.

David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter Miami, praised Martino saying, “Tata is an esteemed figure in soccer whose reputation precedes him. We are optimistic that his impressive credentials and experience as a head coach will galvanize our team and thrill our fans. We are eager to witness the influence he will wield both on and off the pitch.”

Inter Miami stated that Martino “will commence his coaching duties after his work permit is processed”.

He is soon set to join forces with his fellow Argentine, Lionel Messi, 36, who reached an agreement with Inter Miami after leaving Paris St-Germain on June 7th.

This collaboration will mark the third time that Martino and Messi, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, have teamed up, following their tenure at Barcelona and the Argentina national team.

With proven success in the United States, having guided Atlanta United to the MLS Cup victory in 2018 during his two-year stint, Martino brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

“We are thrilled to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We believe he is a coach who aligns with our club’s ambitions and we are positive about what we can achieve together,” commented Jorge Mas, the managing owner of Inter Miami.

“Tata’s coaching pedigree at the top tiers of the game will significantly aid us as we strive for titles.”

Currently, Inter Miami is languishing at the bottom of the MLS standings with 13 defeats in their 18 matches in 2023, and Javier Morales has been holding the fort since Neville’s exit.
