The German cyclist showcased her sprinting prowess and crossed the finish line ahead of defending champion Van Vleuten and New Zealand’s Niamh Fisher-Black.
Niedermaier, at just 20 years old, executed a perfectly timed race strategy while Van Vleuten and stage four winner Elisa Longo Borghini suffered unfortunate crashes.
Despite a valiant effort in pursuit, the Dutch rider couldn’t bridge the gap.
“It’s an overwhelming feeling because this is my first Giro Donne, and considering my young age,” Niedermaier shared with Cycling News.
“I dedicate this victory to my late grandmother. Her passing earlier this year was a great loss for our family, as she held a special place in my heart.”
Niedermaier’s win propelled her to second place in the general classification standings, trailing four-time winner Van Vleuten by two minutes and seven seconds. American cyclist Veronica Ewers sits an additional 11 seconds behind in third place.
