Joe Root IPL 2024

England’s top-order batter Joe Root has decided to skip the 2024 Indian Premier League, echoing the steps of England Test captain Ben Stokes.

Stokes had previously announced his non-participation in the esteemed T20 event on November 23, citing the need to prioritize his overall workload and physical well-being.

Root, aged 32 and a pivotal figure for England, made a limited appearance for Rajasthan Royals in the 2023 IPL edition, with only a single batting opportunity.

Kumar Sangakkara, the director of cricket for the Royals, expressed full support for Root’s decision, extending best wishes for his future endeavors.

Recently contracted for three years with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Root featured prominently in every match of the recent World Cup held in India.

His role is also expected to be crucial in England’s upcoming five-Test series in India, commencing on January 25 in Hyderabad.

Rob Key, ECB’s director of men’s cricket, mentioned the necessity of a “break” for the former England captain Root, as he was excluded from the upcoming limited-overs series against the West Indies.

Root was acquired by the Royals for £100,000 in the 2023 mini-auction, marking his IPL debut. Despite this, his participation was mostly limited to off-field duties.

In his solitary innings against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 14, Root scored 10 runs off 15 balls. Nonetheless, Sangakkara commended Root for his significant, albeit brief, contribution to the team’s spirit and dynamics.

Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan captain, noted Root’s short yet impactful presence in the team, highlighting his positive influence and valuable experience.

Root, with an impressive Test career average of 50.29 and 11,416 runs, is on the verge of surpassing Sir Alastair Cook as England’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket, needing 1,057 more runs to claim the record.

Sangakkara seems pretty chill about the whole thing, guess its part of the game but still, losing Root is a hit for the royals.

Good on Root, Test cricket needs him more than T20 does. Shows where his priorities are, respect that.
