Just when Fulham’s Joao Palhinha thought he was Bayern Munich-bound, especially after leveling the score against Arsenal last week, the universe said, “Not so fast.”
The 28-year-old midfielder was granted the green light to jet over to Germany, but only on the condition that Fulham could secure a replacement before finalizing the move. Alas, the clock struck 17:00 BST on the German transfer window, and Fulham hadn’t signed anyone to fill Palhinha’s shoes. So, no Bavarian lederhosen for Palhinha this season.
In an unexpected twist, Everton’s Alex Iwobi seems poised to switch gears and head to Fulham after a £22m agreement was hashed out between the clubs.
Both Joao Palhinha and Bayern Munich’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, are probably moping right about now. Palhinha had visions of Champions League glory dancing in his head, and Tuchel had penciled him in as a cornerstone of the squad, especially after landing the English football gem, Harry Kane.
Bayern was even ready to break the bank by offering a sum north of £65 million, a would-be record sale for Fulham. But the Cottagers said, “Hold my tea,” refusing to let go of their midfield linchpin until they could bolster that specific unit of Marco Silva’s battalion.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch—or rather, the Everton estate—Alex Iwobi hasn’t had the best start to the season. He’s featured in two out of three of Everton’s Premier League games but sat out the recent loss to Wolves due to injury. The Toffees have been singing the “We’ve Got Zero Points” blues thus far. Iwobi, the 27-year-old Nigerian midfielder, has clocked in 123 league showings and netted the ball six times since joining Everton from Arsenal in the balmy summer of 2019.
