RB Leipzig Sports Director Confirms Josko Gvardiol’s Desire to Join Manchester City

According to RB Leipzig’s Sports Director, Max Eberl, Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol has expressed his intention to move to Manchester City.

Negotiations are currently underway between the two clubs regarding the transfer of the 21-year-old center-back.

As of now, City has not made a formal bid, as per sources from Sport Newes Center.

Eberl informed the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper, “Josko and his representatives have communicated their desire for a transfer to Manchester City. We are currently engaged in discussions, and there is no further information to provide at this time.”

Reports suggest that Gvardiol’s potential price tag could reach around £86m, making him the most expensive defender in the history of football.

Gvardiol played a significant role in helping Croatia reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar. Meanwhile, Leipzig achieved a third-place finish in the Bundesliga and won the German Cup last season.

Leipzig’s Champions League journey came to an end with a resounding 8-1 aggregate loss against Manchester City, following a 1-1 draw in Germany and a crushing 7-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Should Gvardiol depart, he would join a list of high-profile players leaving Leipzig this summer, including Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Konrad Laimer.

French forward Nkunku has joined Chelsea, Hungarian midfielder Szoboszlai has signed with Liverpool, and Laimer has moved to domestic rivals Bayern Munich.

Eberl expressed understanding for the disappointment and concern of the fans, stating, “No club or coach in the world wants to lose players of this caliber. However, we have prepared for such scenarios, and I can assure you that we will once again have a strong and exciting team.”
