In an impressive display at the Big Air World Cup in Beijing, China, Great Britain’s Kirsty Muir secured her first podium finish by claiming second place on Saturday. The young 19-year-old Scottish athlete, who had just finished fourth at her season’s first World Cup event in Austria due to an early closure from adverse weather, shone brightly in Beijing.

The top spot was taken by Mathilde Gremaud from Switzerland, while Flora Tabanelli of Italy snagged the third position. Muir, not new to World Cup success, has been a two-time podium finisher in slopestyle events. Her accomplishments include a second place in Aspen in 2021 and another in Mammoth earlier this year. This recent achievement in Beijing marks her 10th consecutive top-10 finish since her performance at the 2021 Silvaplana World Cup.

Saturday was a significant day for Muir as she achieved her first ever podium in the Big Air World Cup category. Alongside her, Britain’s Mia Brookes finished fourth in the women’s snowboard final. The 16-year-old, who holds the title of youngest world champion in snowboarding history, led the qualifiers and scored 166.25 from her two jumps. Winners of the event included Austria’s Anna Gasser, Australia’s Tess Coady, and Japan’s Miyabi Onitsuka.

Muir had a promising start in Beijing, leading the standings after her first two jumps, with only the best two of three scores counting. However, her third jump didn’t match her earlier success, leading her to a total score of 167.25, while Gremaud led with 175.50.

Expressing joy and pride, Muir commented on the day’s events. “I’m super happy with how today went, the weather was perfect and the jump felt really good,” she said. Despite a hiccup in her final run, she remains enthusiastic and grateful, looking forward to her next competition with high spirits.

The World Cup circuit moves next to Copper Mountain, Colorado, in the United States, from December 13 to 16.
