League Two Fixtures: Wrexham, Owned by Hollywood Figures, Begin with Match Against MK Dons on Opening Weekend

After a 15-year absence, Wrexham will be competing in League Two for the first time when they kick off their season at home against MK Dons on Saturday, 5 August.

Under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Welsh club secured promotion as champions of the National League in their second full season.

Accrington, alongside MK Dons, faced relegation from League One last season, with Accrington hosting Newport in their first League Two match in five years.

Notts County, on their return to the English Football League, will face Sutton.

Here is a list of the 2023-24 League Two fixtures for each club:

  • Sheff Wed will host Saints to commence the Championship season.
  • Reading will host Peterborough on the opening day of League One.

Stockport, who narrowly lost the play-off final to Carlisle in a penalty shootout at Wembley, will welcome Gillingham in their campaign opener.

Bradford City and Salford, both beaten in the play-off semi-finals last season, will start their season away from home against Crawley Town and Forest Green Rovers, respectively.

Morecambe, Forest Green, MK Dons, and Accrington, all relegated from League One, will face Walsall, each in their first match.

All League Two fixtures are set to kick off at 15:00 BST on Saturday, 5 August.

The first mid-week fixtures will take place 10 days later on Tuesday, 15 August.

The 2023-24 season is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, 27 April 2024.

Here are the first-round fixtures in full:

  • Accrington Stanley vs. Newport County
  • Colchester United vs. Swindon Town
  • Crawley Town vs. Bradford City
  • Crewe Alexandra vs. Mansfield Town
  • Doncaster Rovers vs. Harrogate Town
  • Forest Green Rovers vs. Salford City
  • Grimsby Town vs. AFC Wimbledon
  • Morecambe vs. Walsall

The Hollywood of Wrexham Welcomes League Two

Since its acquisition by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in February 2021, Wrexham’s fortunes have been transformed.

Their 15-year absence from the league ended spectacularly last season as they clinched the National League title with a record-breaking 111 points.

The dramatic race for promotion from the National League has even been given the Tinseltown treatment with the production of the highly popular documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham,” set for release later this year.

Although it is uncertain if their return to the EFL will be featured in a third season, the opening fixtures promise to be entertaining. Wrexham will face newly relegated MK Dons in their opener, followed by a match against AFC Wimbledon, who narrowly avoided relegation last season.

They will then have back-to-back home games against Walsall and Swindon Town.

On 23 December, Wrexham will host Newport County in their first Welsh derby and league encounter in a decade.

In an intriguing clash of high-profile owners, Wrexham will take on Salford City, a club with former Manchester United stars Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and Nicky Butt among its stakeholders, on 14 October.

Notts, who defeated Chesterfield in a penalty shootout at Wembley to regain their status as the world’s oldest Football League club after four years in non-league football, will renew their rivalry with Wrexham at Meadow Lane on 28 October.

In the same month, the Magpies will face Mansfield in their first Nottinghamshire derby since 2019.

Stags manager Nigel Clough, whose team narrowly missed out on a play-off spot on the final day of last season, views Notts and Wrexham as significant additions to a league that he believes includes up to 16 teams with aspirations of finishing in the top seven.
