Injury Update

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that left-back Andrew Robertson is set to undergo surgery for a shoulder injury sustained while playing for Scotland. The injury occurred during a challenge with Spain’s goalkeeper, Unai Simon, in a Euro 2024 qualifying match on October 12. Robertson left the pitch cradling his arm, and the decision to opt for surgery has been made to address the issue.

Klopp, who is known for his candid remarks, stated, “The decision we go towards is surgery, that means he’s out for a while. I don’t know exactly how long.” While there was a slight possibility of avoiding surgery, consultation with experts has led to the conclusion that surgery is the best course of action for long-term recovery.

Klopp further explained, “In my experience, you can train pretty quickly again, but not football-specific because you have to be careful of challenges and all these kind of things, so he will be out for a while.” This highlights the importance of ensuring that Robertson recovers fully before returning to the field.

Robertson has been a key figure for Liverpool this season, featuring in eight league games and scoring a goal. His absence may see Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas stepping in for the upcoming Merseyside derby. Tsimikas has already showcased his capabilities by starting in Europa League matches and a League Cup victory this season.

Additionally, Klopp mentioned that other options such as defender Joe Gomez or 19-year-old Luke Chambers could also fill in at left-back if necessary. Klopp emphasized the need for versatile options to maintain the team’s performance, saying, “You need other options as well, and we have to make sure we can use all of them.”

This setback presents a challenge for Liverpool, but it’s an opportunity for other players to step up and demonstrate their capabilities during Robertson’s absence. The team and fans will undoubtedly be eagerly waiting for his return to full fitness.
