Mason Greenwood’s New Chapter: Getafe’s Coach Vows to Revitalize Star Forward’s Career

In a recent statement, Getafe’s head coach Jose Bordalas has committed to assisting English striker Mason Greenwood in regaining his top form. This follows Greenwood’s season-long loan transfer from Manchester United to the Spanish team.

Manchester United announced just last month that Greenwood, at the age of 21, would be parting ways with them, a decision reached by mutual consent following a half-year internal probe into the player.

Greenwood had been under the spotlight after he faced multiple charges, including attempted rape and assault. These charges were subsequently dropped as of February 2023.

The promising young athlete was notably absent from Getafe’s squad in their recent 2-1 loss to Real Madrid. Addressing the media after the La Liga face-off at the Bernabeu, Bordalas stressed, “The situation is far too sensitive to be made light of. Everyone is aware of the events that transpired. The right actions were taken. But we are here to discuss soccer, and in that regard, all the relevant parties have done what they needed to do. The end result is that there was no conviction against him.”

“He is an elite-level player, and he joins our squad with great anticipation. Our aim is to help him rediscover his prime form,” Bordalas added.

Manchester United issued a statement indicating that Greenwood’s shift to Spain is a step toward restarting his football career, albeit away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood had been arrested in January of 2022 due to allegations tied to content that was published on the internet. In a subsequent statement, the young player acknowledged his “mistakes” and accepted his “portion of the blame,” while also clarifying that he “did not engage in the activities he was accused of.”

Manchester United clarified in August that their internal investigation revealed that the information posted online did not offer a complete representation of events and that Greenwood was not guilty of the original charges against him.

Greenwood, who has been contracted with Manchester United through 2025, has chalked up an impressive 35 goals in 129 appearances for the club since making his debut at the tender age of 17 in 2019.

Following his January arrest, corporate partners like Nike severed their sponsorship ties with Greenwood, and Electronic Arts also removed him from active rosters in its Fifa 22 video game.

However, the charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses retracted their statements and new evidence emerged, leading the Crown Prosecution Service to state that there was “no longer a realistic chance of a guilty verdict.”

Manchester United then initiated their own internal review of Greenwood, who had earlier been identified as one of Europe’s most valuable players in the top five leagues. Upon concluding their investigation, United announced, “Everyone involved, including Mason, realizes the challenges he would face in resuming his career at Manchester United. As a result, we have jointly agreed that the best course of action would be for him to rebuild his career elsewhere, away from Old Trafford.”
