Mathieu van der Poel Wins Monumental Paris-Roubaix One-Day Classic

by admin

Mathieu van der Poel, 28, achieved an incredible victory in the world-famous Paris-Roubaix Race on Sunday. This race is commonly known as the ‘hell of the north’ and considered one of the toughest one-day races out there; this also marked Mathieu’s third Monument win!

“I had one of my best days on the bike,” said Mathieu after his first victory in the gruelling Paris-Roubaix race.

Mathieu Van der Poel won the Milan-San Remo race this year. He also won the Tour of Flanders in 2020 and 2022, and he recently won the Cyclo-cross World Championship for his fifth win.

After John Degenkolb had an accident on the cobbled Carrefour de l’Arbre section, Mathieu launched an attack and succeeded in winning these titles.

His main competitor, Wout van Aert, was with him and it looked like the same exciting race would happen again (like in February), when Van der Poel beat Van Aert and became cyclo-cross champion.

But then, Van Aert from Jumbo-Visma had a flat tire which let Van der Poel rush to win the famous Velodrome Andre-Petrieux event — Paris-Roubaix.

When I passed him, he was riding very slowly. I could tell something was wrong but didn’t know it was a flat tyre. It’s too bad that we couldn’t cross the finish line together, but it’s all part of the race. You need good luck and lots of energy to win these kind of races and I had both today.

My teammate Jasper Philipsen came in second place and another Belgian called Van Aert got third. Finally, former road world champion Mads Pedersen from Denmark finished in fourth place during the 120th Paris-Roubaix Race.

Mathieu van der Poel completed an incredible win at the Paris-Roubaix race this year. He gave a great performance in all of his classic races, and he was really happy with how well his team had done, as fellow member Jasper Philipsen came in second place.
