Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom Set to Exit: Chris Sutton Expresses Deep Sympathy

Having taken charge of 98 matches as Sheffield United’s main man, Paul Heckingbottom is on the brink of an exit.

Ex-Chelsea forward Chris Sutton has voiced his profound empathy for Heckingbottom, whose tenure at Sheffield United is coming to an abrupt end.

On Monday, Sports News Center revealed that Heckingbottom’s departure from the Premier League outfit was imminent, following the team’s crushing 5-0 defeat against Burnley on Saturday.

While the Blades have yet to make an official statement, the specifics of his exit are still being ironed out.

Chris Wilder, the former manager of United, is widely tipped to step into Heckingbottom’s shoes.

Sheffield United currently languishes at the bottom of the Premier League, managing only five points and suffering 11 losses in their first 14 games.

Heckingbottom, who succeeded Wilder in November 2021, successfully steered the team back to the Premier League, finishing second in the Championship last season.

“What else could he have done?” Sutton queries. “Sheffield United’s position at the bottom is hardly a shock – it’s exactly where we predicted they would be.

“In the Championship, he outperformed expectations. Had he just made it to the playoffs, perhaps he’d still be employed.”

Heckingbottom lamented the lackluster performance of certain players during their match against Burnley, a game that saw Burnley rise from the bottom, and followed a 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth.

“Losing so decisively to a key rival like that doesn’t bode well for job security,” Sutton remarks.

“After their 8-0 thrashing by Newcastle earlier in the season, and now these heavy losses to Bournemouth and Burnley, coupled with the undisciplined behavior of some players, it was bound to happen.

“I truly feel for Paul. When they’re inevitably relegated – and they will be – they’ll be missing someone like Paul Heckingbottom to lead them back to the top.”

Chris Sutton’s always spot on with his analysis, massive respect for him standing up for Heckingbottom. But yeah, those losses were brutal, no denying.
