In a thrilling showdown, the Florida Panthers managed to close the gap in the Stanley Cup finals, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in overtime.
The Panthers, ranked as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, faced off against the Western Conference’s top seeds, the Golden Knights.
During their first home game in the best-of-seven series, the Panthers secured the win with a goal from Carter Verhaeghe just five minutes into overtime.
Matthew Tkachuk also played a pivotal role, tying the game for the Panthers with a little over two minutes remaining in regulation.
Previously, the Panthers had faced defeat in all six of their Stanley Cup finals matches.
Their 1996 end-of-season finals saw them swept 4-0 by the Colorado Avalanche.
On the other hand, the Golden Knights, established in 2017, are striving for their first-ever Stanley Cup victory.
Vegas’ Mark Stone equalized the score in the first period following Brandon Montour’s opener, and Jonathan Marchessault provided the visitors with a 2-1 lead in the second period.
The teams are set to clash again in Florida on Sunday at 01:00 BST.
Historically, out of the 55 teams that trailed 2-1 in the Stanley Cup finals, only 11 managed to overcome the deficit and claim the trophy.
