Tottenham Acquires Italian Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli on a Quintuple-Year Agreement

Tottenham Hotspur has added Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to its roster from Empoli on a contract that spans five years. Although Vicario is yet to make his debut in an international match, he was available as a substitute during Italy’s defeat to Spain in the Nations League semi-final in June.

This move marks the second acquisition under the club’s newly appointed manager, Ange Postecoglou, following the permanent contract of Swedish midfielder Dejan Kulusevski, who initially joined on loan.

The 26-year-old Vicario has left an impression during his two-year stint at Empoli, which led to his inaugural call-up to the international team in the previous season. His entry into the Spurs team comes as their captain and first-choice goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, enters the final year of his current contract.

Tottenham, the North London team, characterizes Vicario as a “dominant goalkeeper with the capacity to initiate play from the rear”. Vicario’s professional career launched at Udinese, with subsequent tenures at Cagliari, Perugia, and Venezia, before landing at Empoli in July 2021 following the team’s elevation to Serie A.

Contrary to expectations of a relegation struggle, Empoli – with the 6ft 4in Vicario in goal – has secured back-to-back 14th-place finishes. Vicario had an impressive previous season, conceding a mere 39 goals across 31 league matches and keeping a clean sheet seven times, as Empoli secured a comfortable 12-point margin above the relegation zone.

Vicario’s first international nod came in September when he was a substitute in Italy’s 1-0 home defeat by England in the European Championship qualifiers. Since then, he has been named a substitute for friendlies against Albania and Austria and during their journey to the Nations League semi-final this month.

Fraser Forster, 35, another keeper option for Tottenham, stepped in last season when Lloris was sidelined due to injury.

Empoli’s loss is Tottenham’s gain. Vicario’s had a solid record in the Serie A. Hope he carries that into his time with spurs. He’s got my watchful eye on him!
