Will Young Returns to Nottinghamshire for the 2024 Cricket Season

Cricket enthusiasts in Nottinghamshire have reason to celebrate as the county team has re-signed New Zealand batter, Will Young, for a significant portion of the 2024 county season. Young, who has an impressive career record with 7,262 first-class runs at an average of 40.12, along with 15 centuries to his name, is set to make a return to Trent Bridge.

The 31-year-old Kiwi will be donning the green and gold jersey for Nottinghamshire in seven County Championship games and the entire T20 Blast campaign. His previous stint with the team in 2023 saw him make an impact with 299 runs in three Championship games, including a memorable innings of 145 against Surrey.

Reflecting on his experience at The Oval during his debut with Nottinghamshire, Young said, “I couldn’t have asked for a better debut at The Oval. It was great to play four hard days of cricket and come out with a solid draw. I felt like I slotted into the group nicely and I’m looking forward to contributing even more this season.”

Young’s international record is no less impressive, with 13 Tests, 29 one-day internationals, and 14 T20 internationals for the Black Caps. His explosive batting style is well-suited to the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, boasting an overall strike rate of over 133. Young is eager to entertain the crowds at Trent Bridge, saying, “The opportunity to play white-ball games in front of packed out crowds at Trent Bridge was a really attractive prospect for me, too. It’s a superb place to bat, and I’m hoping I can help the team go a step further in the Blast in 2024.”

Nottinghamshire will see new captains leading the charge in all formats next summer, with Steven Mullaney stepping down from his role. Haseeb Hameed will lead the team in red-ball and 50-over cricket, while Joe Clarke will take the reins in the Blast.

The upcoming season for Nottinghamshire will kick off with a home Championship game against Essex, beginning on April 5th, although Young will not be available until the away game against Somerset two weeks later. The first T20 group fixture will take place at home against Northamptonshire, a team Young is familiar with, having played for them in the past.

Head coach Peter Moores expressed his excitement about Young’s return, stating, “Will adds valuable experience to our batting group, especially with the potential loss of Ben Duckett to England for large portions of the season. He fitted brilliantly into the squad last season and will give us continuity as we navigate our way through the business part of our season.”
