Wimbledon 2023 Draw: Andy Murray Set to Face Ryan Peniston at All England Club

In 2013 and 2016, Andy Murray emerged victorious as the men’s singles champion at Wimbledon.

In a captivating first-round match at Wimbledon, two-time champion Andy Murray will be pitted against fellow Briton Ryan Peniston.

Despite missing out on a seeding for the grass-court Grand Slam event, the 36-year-old former world number one has drawn wildcard Peniston, who currently holds the 267th rank globally.

The winner of this match faces a formidable challenge in the second round against Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem.

The 136th Championships will commence at the All England Club on Monday.

Novak Djokovic from Serbia, vying for his record-equalling 24th major title and eighth Wimbledon men’s title, will begin his campaign against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin.

Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, the defending women’s singles champion, will commence her title defense against American Shelby Rogers.

Rybakina, aged 23, is seeded third and has been placed in the same half of the draw as Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka, indicating a potential clash in the semi-finals.

Rybakina and Sabalenka, the latter facing Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in her first match, have been assigned to the bottom half of the draw.

This section is packed with players who possess a strong track record on grass courts, including last year’s finalist Ons Jabeur from Tunisia, Czech two-time champion Petra Kvitova, Czech 2021 runner-up Karolina Pliskova, and Brazilian 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Top seed Iga Swiatek from Poland, with no previous Wimbledon success beyond the fourth round, has a relatively favorable path as she strives for her fifth major title.

The 22-year-old Swiatek will face China’s Lin Zhu in the opening round, while American seventh seed Coco Gauff, a potential quarter-final opponent for Swiatek, will take on Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion who qualified after dropping in the rankings.

Another standout first-round match features American five-time champion Venus Williams, aged 43, against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, a semi-finalist in 2019.

Cameron Norrie, the British men’s number one who reached the semi-finals last year and holds the 12th seed, will commence his campaign against Czech qualifier Tomas Machac.

However, the 27-year-old Norrie might face a challenging route to the later stages if the draw follows the projected seedings.

Norrie could potentially face American 22nd seed Sebastian Korda in the third round, with Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev looming in the fourth round and quarter-finals.

Dan Evans is the only other British player with a seeding, and the 33-year-old will start against France’s Quentin Halys.
