Ukrainian tennis star, Elina Svitolina, attributes her surprising Wimbledon semi-final achievement to the mental strength she garnered from the war back home.

After taking a three-month hiatus from the tour to welcome her baby in October, Svitolina triumphed over top-seeded Iga Swiatek 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 in the quarter-finals.

Svitolina expressed her pleasure in bringing “a bit of joy” to her fellow Ukrainians, and how the war shifted her mindset.

“Mentally, I no longer view challenging situations as catastrophes,” she noted.

“Life presents more daunting things.

“The war not only made me stronger but also mentally resilient,” Svitolina added.

Svitolina’s Victory Over Swiatek Lands Her in the Semi-Finals

The former world’s third-ranking player enjoyed spirited support from an emotionally vested Centre Court audience. They celebrated her incredible performance against the backdrop of the ongoing war and her recent transition into motherhood.

While she appreciated the support from the spectators, Svitolina was even more thrilled about the potential impact her unexpected semi-final progression could have back home.

“The numerous online videos of kids watching on their phones warmed my heart,” the 28-year-old expressed.

Taking advantage of Swiatek’s 41 unforced errors, Svitolina secured her third Grand Slam semi-final spot and her second at the All England Club since 2019.

Despite a delay due to rain after the first set, Svitolina kept her cool and served to victory on her first attempt. This historic win will most likely boost her from the 76th spot to within the top 30 in the world rankings.

“My motivation to get back to the top is immense. However, having a child and experiencing war has transformed me. I now perceive things differently,” Svitolina said.

“I have become more composed.”

Svitolina’s daughter may be her motivation, but what was her daughter Skai’s reaction to seeing her mother on a video call after this significant victory?

“Skai was more interested in her ice cream, so I wasn’t her main focus,” Svitolina said with a smile.

“At her age, she doesn’t bother about whether I win or lose.”

However, Swiatek, Svitolina’s defeated opponent, was concerned. After the loss, she conveyed her support for her friend to win her first Grand Slam title this Saturday.

“I wished her luck in winning this tournament,” stated the Polish player, who has been showing support for Ukraine amid the Russian invasion by donning a yellow and blue ribbon – the Ukrainian flag colors – on her cap.

Svitolina, along with other Ukrainian players competing at Wimbledon and other grass-court events this summer, have also received support from the LTA and the All England Club. They have sponsored their accommodation and supplied training facilities.

“I’m genuinely grateful to the Championships for the additional support,” Svitolina said. “England’s unwavering support for Ukrainians is astounding, and we can’t thank them enough for their tremendous efforts.”

Svitolina is scheduled to compete against unseeded Czech Marketa Vondrousova in Thursday’s semi-finals, following her victory over American fourth seed Jessica Pegula, the 2019 French Open finalist.
